Keep Your X-15 Spinning: Operator Tips
- New machine: Remove the four shipping brackets around the motor mount before the first run, or the head will vibrate and can be damaged.
- Filling: With the motor off, fill the head about 90% full, then turn it by hand to spread the sugar. Never add sugar while the head is spinning.
- Heat: Start at full heat. As soon as floss appears, turn the heat down until the smoking stops, because running hot carbonizes the ribbons fast.
- Sugar: Use Flossugar or pure cane or beet sugar. Free-flowing restaurant sugar contains cornstarch, which burns onto the ribbons.
- Floss height: If floss collects low on the stabilizer, twist the leading edge of each leather floater down to lift it higher.
